Measuring Techniques

When measuring, lay the end of the tape in the exact intersection point of the markings at the beginning and ending of each measurement. With each measurement, hold the tape in place and check the ends to make sure you started and ended correctly and the tape hasn't slipped. That's all there is to it. Imagine the tape itself as fabric when measuring. It will give you a clearer image of how tight or loose to hold the tape when taking a particular measurement. Please, do not add ease to your body's measurements. Be as accurate as possible, but use your judgment on how loose or tight to hold the tape on each measurement. Note the comments at each section. (Remember your posture while being measured. Stand up straight and tall). Measure to the nearest 1/8". Measure both sides. Take the largest measurement and write it on the measurement chart. Remember, your goal is to take measurements that will be used to computer draft a basic pattern for your outfit.

     ______________Inches

NECK- The Neck Circumference measurement is taken high up around the middle of the neck - not at the base.

  ______________Inches

SHOULDER LENGTH - The Shoulder Length is measured from the base of the neck below the ear lobe (side view) to the shoulder point.

It is important to measure both sides. If the measurements are different, you should accept the shorter measurement to avoid having the garment come too close to the neck in the pattern.

  ______________Inches

FRONT SHOULDER SLOPE - measure from the outside shoulder point to the center front at the waist. This is a straight diagonal line. Measure both sides to make sure you've placed the center waist point at the real center. If the left and right shoulder slopes are different lengths, see if the center mark might need to be moved. If you think it's not the mark, if one shoulder is truly higher than the other, then take the longer of the 2 measurements.

______________Inches

Back Shoulder Slope- The Back Shoulder Slope is measured from the shoulder point diagonally to the center back at the parallel natural waistline. The Back Shoulder Slope will be about 1” (2.5 cm) shorter than the Front Shoulder Slope.

If the front is flat, this measurement will be very close to the Front Shoulder Slope. Same as in the front check the left and right, make sure you're measuring from the real center back waist, and if one shoulder is truly higher, use the longer   measurement.

   ______________Inches

FRONT SHOULDER WIDTH- The Front Shoulder Width is taken from shoulder point to shoulder point straight across the front of the body.

The Front Shoulder Width should be between .5” (1.25 cm) and 2” (5 cm) smaller than the Back Shoulder Width. Persons with rounded shoulders will have a larger difference between the two measurements than persons with very straight backs.

  ______________Inches

BACK SHOULDER WIDTH- The Back Shoulder Width is measured from shoulder point to shoulder point straight across the back of the body. The Back Shoulder Width should be between .5” and 2” longer than the Front Shoulder Width.

   ______________Inches

CENTER FRONT LENGTH- The Center Front Length is measured from the base of the neck at the “wishbone” above the jewel neckline to the natural “parallel” waistline location. Measure between the breasts.

  ______________Inches

CENTER BACK LENGTH- The Center Back Length is measured from the protruding bone at the top of the spine to the natural “parallel” waistline. Be sure to hold the head erect when taking this measurement. Bending the head forward will increase the measurement artificially.

  ______________Inches

CHEST CIRCUMFERENCE- The Chest Circumference is measured around the fullest part of the chest, crossing the bust points, and parallel to the floor.

   ______________Inches

BICEP CIRCUMFERENCE- The Bicep Circumference measurement is taken around the fullest part of the bicep with the arm bent and the hand fisted.

SIDE LENGTH – Measure from the waistline mark on the side up to the underarm where the arm hinges with the body. The lowest measurement point will be along the back of the arm. Lift the arm to find the underarm point, placing the end of the tape exactly on the horizontal mark, and then lower the arm to take the measurement.

   ______________Inches

WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE- The Waist Circumference measurement is taken around the natural waist and parallel to the floor.

______________Inches

HIPS- The Hip Circumference is measured around the hip at its fullest point and parallel to the floor. Take the lower body circumference in three different locations as indicated below. Use the largest measurement of the three.

___________Height    _____________Weight

Enter your height as measured from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet without shoes on.

*Your weight is a required measurement.

          ______________Inches

Crotch Length- The Crotch Length is measured from the center front at the natural waistline through the legs to the center back at the natural waistline.

GIRTH- Start the measuring tape at the top of the shoulder midpoint between the neck and end of shoulder. Holding the tape at the starting point, bring the tape down the front of the body, through the legs and up the back to the starting point. You will have created a circle with the measuring tape. Make sure this is a comfortable fitted measurement and do not all slack in the tape.
